That's the allure of all-inclusive resort vacations. It's a travel style where your wallet stays safe and your stress stays home. But, like pineapple on pizza or Die Hard as a Christmas movie, the world of all-inclusive resorts is filled with passionate fans and ardent skeptics.

How do all-inclusive resorts work?

Even though it sounds too good to be true, all-inclusive hotels and resorts are pretty self-explanatory. Guests pay one upfront cost and almost everything is included — from accommodation and activities to all your food and drinks. In theory, once you arrive at the hotel, you don't have to spend another cent if you don't want to.

Every resort is different, but you can generally expect the following inclusions:

  • Accommodation at the resort (of course!)
  • All meals and multiple on-site restaurants
  • Unlimited drinks, often including alcoholic beverages
  • Unlimited daily activities (think water sports, ski lessons, cooking demos, fitness classes and pool access)
  • Live music, shows and nightly entertainment
  • Supervised kids’ clubs and teen hangout zones

So, now you know how it works, let's dive into the pros and cons of all-inclusive resorts.

The undisputed perks of all-inclusive resorts

What can we say? We love all-inclusive resorts and think you will, too, because they’re easy to book, offer great value and are as fun as they are convenient.

Perk #1: Makes budgeting easy

The biggest and most obvious perk when it comes to all-inclusive resorts is that they offer fantastic value for money, with one upfront cost. It's easy for vacation spending to creep up on you. A meal here, an activity there. Pretty soon you're way over budget and the worst part is you probably won't even realize it until you get home and open your bank account.

With all-inclusive packages, you know exactly how much you'll be spending before you pack your bags. Sure, you might choose to spend a little extra money on day trips or special resort packages, but for the most part, everything's taken care of.

This vacation style is especially cost-effective for families and group getaways. Food and drinks add up fast when you're travelling with children. And for friend groups or destination wedding parties? Well, the unlimited cocktails alone can just about justify the cost!

Plus, it makes splitting the bill a breeze. No more awkward “who owes what” conversations or annoying group chats to make sure everyone pays their fair share.

Perk #2: Less research and planning required

When you stay at an all-inclusive resort, everything is ready and waiting for you at the property. That means no more figuring out transport back to your hotel room after a night out on the town or entire vacations spent looking up restaurant reviews only to find everything closed when you actually get there. Once you've found and booked the perfect resort, there's very little left to organize.

Specifically designed to make your vacation easy, all-inclusive resorts are also a great option for anxious or first-time travellers who don’t want to stress about overcoming language barriers or fumbling with local currencies. Your hotel will make the whole experience a breeze. Many resorts also include gratuities for added convenience, so you won’t need to worry about navigating tipping culture either.

Perk #3: Entertainment and activities are all organized

Another major plus when it comes to all-inclusive resorts is that your days and nights are filled with endless entertainment and activities — all included in the price, of course!

There’s something for everyone, including water activities like kayaking, paddleboarding and snorkelling as well as land sports like beach volleyball, tennis, mini golf and basketball. You'll also often find fitness sessions, morning yoga, arts and crafts, cooking demonstrations and dance classes. And that's just during the daytime! Once the sun sets, enjoy live music, trivia sessions, karaoke evenings, comedy shows and more.

But the true beauty of an all-inclusive resort stay is that you can schedule your break to be as busy or as relaxing as you like. Want to drink alcohol and lounge by the pool or wander down to the beach for the afternoon with your book? Be our guest! Prefer to pack in as many of the activities as you can and get your money's worth? You'll never run out of things to do.

Perk #4: Kids’ clubs give parents some downtime

And while we're on the topic of entertainment and activities, most family-friendly all-inclusive resorts come equipped with exciting kids’ clubs — perfect for your next family vacation.

The kids will love getting a taste of independence and exploring the resort with their new friends, while parents and guardians can relax by the pool or enjoy some of the other activities for themselves. A total win-win, if you ask us!

Perk #5: Social atmosphere makes it easy to meet new people

Whether you're travelling solo, as a couple or with your family, all-inclusive resorts are a fantastic way to make new friends on vacation.

Shared spaces around the pool and dining areas, along with group activities like dance classes, sports on the beach and trivia nights, make it easy to bond and strike up a conversation with your fellow travellers. Who knows, you might wind up finding vacation friends for life.

The possible downsides of all-inclusive resorts

Okay, so even though we're team all-inclusive resorts all the way, there are one or two things to keep in mind before deciding on this travel style for your next vacation.

Downside #1: Can make it easy to miss out on local culture

One of the most common pitfalls of an all-inclusive resort stay is that everything becomes slightly too convenient... and by that we mean travellers sometimes forget to actually leave the hotel and explore the local area.

Just because you don't have to leave the resort, doesn't mean you shouldn't. So, make sure you venture outside of those all-inclusive walls and into the local community! Explore nearby attractions, strike up conversations with local people, take part in authentic experiences and immerse yourself in the local culture. Oh, and just because your food and drinks are covered back at the hotel doesn't mean you can't still sample just a couple of local restaurants while you're out exploring.

Downside #2: Premium experiences and excursions often cost extra

Something else to keep in mind before booking an all-inclusive hotel stay is that not everything is included. Even though you'll have everything you need and more, many all-inclusive resorts cater to a wide range of budgets and different price points. In other words: there will always be extra services, experiences and packages on offer.

Motorized water sports like jet skiing and wakeboarding, scuba diving, off-site excursions and spa treatments typically come with an additional price tag. Not only that, but some all-inclusive resorts charge extra for specialty restaurants, à la carte dining or premium drinks, so it's important to read up on exactly what's included in the price and what costs extra.

Whether organized through the resort or independently, excursions and day trips outside of the resort won't be included. So, if you're the kind of traveller who likes to spend every waking minute out exploring a destination, paying for an all-inclusive resort package may not be the best value for you.

How to plan the perfect all-inclusive resort vacation

So, now that you've heard the pros and cons of all-inclusive resorts, you're probably wondering how to organize the perfect trip? We've got you covered!

Here are our top tips for making the most of your next all-inclusive resort vacation.

Choose your dream destination

When you imagine an all-inclusive resort vacation, you're probably picturing a sun-drenched paradise right by the beach, right? Well, you can't go wrong with destinations like Mexico, the Caribbean, Costa Rica or the Maldives, which are some of our most popular vacation spots when it comes to all-inclusive resorts.

But what if the beach isn't really your vibe? There's a bit of a misconception that all-inclusive resorts are only for beachfront bliss and poolside paradise, but there are lots of other options available — think ski resorts, safari lodges and cruise vacations!

Find an all-inclusive resort that suits your travel style

Not all all-inclusive resorts are created equal, so it's worth doing your research and working with your Travel Expert to find a resort that suits your travel style.

Solo traveller? Look for properties that reduce or waive any single supplements. Planning a romantic couples getaway? Book an adults-only resort stay for a more relaxed atmosphere. From family-friendly resorts and wheelchair-accessible properties to hotels designed with foodies in mind, all-inclusive resorts come in lots of shapes and sizes.

Your Travel Expert can help you understand all the options available so you can make an informed decision and book the resort that best suits your travel style

Book early and confirm exactly what's included

Popular all-inclusive resorts, especially in destinations like Punta Cana, Puerto Vallarta and Montego Bay, can book up quickly during peak travel seasons. Booking early will often give you the best availability and the cheapest rates, so it's a total no-brainer to get organized sooner rather than later!

And on the topic of booking, this is the time to make sure you've read through all the terms and conditions to confirm exactly what's included in your vacation package. Trust us, it's worth taking the time to do this now to avoid any surprises later on.

Balance time relaxing in the resort with time outside the resort

Remember that pitfall above about forgetting to leave the resort? Avoid the convenience trap by booking at least one or two local excursions outside of the resort. Yes, it'll cost you a little extra money, but we think it's totally worth it.

So, book that Saona Island day trip from Punta Cana, go ziplining in Costa Rica and make time to explore ancient Mayan culture and the local cuisine in Cancún — it's all about balance. Don't worry, the swim-up bar will still be at the resort when you get back!

Get involved and give everything a go!

You've already paid for it, so you might as well try everything at least once. The dance lessons you'd normally skip? Give it a go. That evening show you're not 100% sure about? You've already got tickets! This is your reminder to test out all the amenities, eat dinner at all the different restaurants and say yes to all the activities you'd usually pass on.
