There’s no better place than the Maldives to celebrate a new beginning. Known for its beaches, blue lagoons and extensive reefs, the Maldives is one of the most idyllic destinations in the world. Lounge in your overwater villa, snorkel the clear blue waters or bask in rays for days. In the Maldives, you lovebirds can do as much or as little as you please.

While you’re planning, be sure to read through our honeymoon guide and find out the best places to stay for couples, when to visit the Maldives, helpful information for LGBTQ+ couples visiting the islands and things to do on your honeymoon.

Best places to stay for couples

The North Malé, South Malé and Ari Atolls are known for world-class resorts, private islands and the utmost in beachfront luxury. They’re the best places to stay because they’re most easily accessible and offer a variety of things to do whether that’s surfing, snorkelling, diving, or heading to some of the islands’ best nightclubs and restaurants.

Staying somewhere central will also allow you to venture off-the-beaten-path more easily and explore some of the locals’ islands to experience authentic Maldivian culture. Depending on how high you want to turn up the dial on your adventure for two, start with the North Malé, South Malé and Ari Atolls for underwater adventures, overwater villa beach bliss and more.

Best time to visit the Maldives

The year-round tropical climate makes the Maldives the perfect destination to visit any time, but the best time to visit is between January and March when the water is the calmest and the skies are the clearest.

Peak season in the Maldives is between November and April when it’s hot and dry, and the average temperature falls between 28°C and 30°C. Rarely does the temperature fall below 25°C. Monsoon season (low season) is between May and July, then from September to November, but the temperature will still be nice and hot, about the average or higher.

LGBTQ+ couples in the Maldives

The best places in the Maldives for LGBTQ+ couples to stay are on the resort islands, like these ones (and many more):

Fesdu Island, North Ari Atoll

Rangali Island, Mandhoo, Alif Dhal Atoll

Villingili Island, Maradhoofeydhoo, Adu Atoll

Resort islands are privately owned by international chains who have their own islands and their own set of rules. For example, on resort islands, you can buy alcohol and women don’t need to cover up on the beach. Same-sex couples will feel more at home on these islands.

Maldives is a strict Muslim country. The capital, Malé, and the local islands are extremely conservative, and the situation with LGBTQ+ locals is not great. With that being said, and this applies to everyone, the Maldives is a safe destination to visit when the local culture is observed. To ensure that your resort is LGBTQ+-friendly, talk to one of our LGBTQ+ Expert Travellers who can help and find out for you.
