About Fiji

Fiji is a cluster of more than 300 islands in the South Pacific Ocean, neighbouring Australia, New Zealand, and Vanuatu, and formed mostly by volcanic activities occurring more than 150-million years ago. The islands are surrounded by some of the largest reef systems in the world, including the Great Astrolabe Reef in Kadavu.

With tropical weather year-round, the islands can be visited throughout the year. But those hoping to avoid rain should watch out for storm season, falling between November and April.

Most of the inhabited islands are reachable by ferry, helicopter, and seaplanes. Fiji has one of the most developed economies and infrastructure in the region, so urban areas are accessible by cars.

Proper currency: Fiji Dollar (FJD), however, most places accept Visa and Mastercard. ATMs, banks, and currency exchange places are also available near hotels and resorts. You will only need a small amount of cash for everyday use and souvenirs, around $300-600.

What to Bring Checklist

  • Light Clothing, including light jackets and sweatshirts for cooler evenings. When it rains in Fiji, it pours, so make sure you have water-repellent clothing as well.
  • Sun protection, including sunscreen with high SPF, sun hats, and sunglasses.
  • Swimwear, flops, breathable shoes and water shoes (reef shoes). If you plan on hiking, bring hiking shoes and water bottles.
  • Power adaptor and personal electronics, i.e. laptop for storing photos and to access the Internet.
  • Mosquito repellent and bug spray.
  • Snorkelling gear, if you don’t want to rent used equipment. Floaties are also nice to have if you plan on jumping into the water from overwater bungalows.
  • Flashlight with extra batteries, because there are no streetlights near the beaches or outdoor locations.
  • Camera and/or underwater cameras and underwater cases, pouches.
  • Buy travel insurance.

Fiji’s local handicrafts, island art and carvings are quite the souvenir to take home. At the local markets look for these traditional Fijian products.

Kava: Used in many traditional ceremonies kava is an integral part of Fijian’s life. The plant’s root is ground into powders and made into beverages that give the drinker a relaxed feeling. Too much, and you just might fall asleep.

Pearl: Considered to be rarest in the world, pearls in Fiji are unique in colour. Pearl-made jewellery is highly sought-after on the island, and you can tour pearl farms with J Hunter Pearls in Savusavu.

Wood carvings: Traditional handmade wood carving products come in many forms. While visiting the islands, look for pieces connected to Fiji’s rich history, including cannibal forks, turtle figures and carvings, and traditional Mako masks.

Coconut shells: Delicately handcrafted, coconut shell bowls are used to serve kava drinks. You’ll also find them made into containers, trinkets, jewellery and other quaint decorative pieces.

Tapa cloth painting: A decorated cloth made from mulberry or breadfruit tree barks, Tapa contains intricate motifs that feature various traditional patterns, flowers, and animals. Beautiful on any mantle, bedroom wall, or as a gift.

Beauty products: Pure Fiji beauty products are made from locally-sourced ingredients and are eco-friendly. Completely organic, Pure Fiji offers spa oils, face creams, shampoos, conditioners, and soaps.
