Contrary to popular belief, it’s not always sunny in Mexico. Although it does come pretty close to that reputation, hurricane season might just bring more than a dash of rain on a well-planned vacation. Perhaps the only thing worse than rain is jostling against the spring breakers and mosh pits for a quiet spot on the beach in Cancun.

From the best time to visit Mexico to when to find the best airfare and deal, we’ve got you covered. Here’s our break down on things to look out for when booking your next trip to Mexico.

Mexico Weather and Climate

Mexico has a diverse range of climates. Parts of the country with higher elevations like Mexico City area or San Cristobal de las Casas experience more rain and colder temperatures from November to January.

Hurricane and rainy seasons sweep in around the Yucatan Peninsula and along the Caribbean coast from early June to the end of November. June to September months are particularly humid along the coast, with some regions experiencing high wind gusts and periodic storms. Central Mexico can also experience heavy downpour around these months.

Northern parts of Mexico, near the United States border, are dry and arid year-round, and experience very little precipitation.

High Season and Busy Times

The high season runs from December to April. Transportation and beachside hotels become crowded throughout these months. The temperature in Mexico during this period is mild and dry.

Foreign tourists flock to Mexico’s beaches during the Winter months and spring break, while domestic tourists tend to travel around Christmas, Easter, and during the summer months.

Shoulder Seasons and Low Seasons

Summer months are humid and wet in most parts of Mexico, and although some hotels in popular coastal destinations like Cancun and Puerto Vallarta are at higher capacity, July and August are quieter than Winter months. Summer is also the best time to enjoy many of Mexico’s folk festivals, enjoy water sports activities or to see sea turtles nesting along the beaches.

Hurricane season isn’t in full swing until September, and most travel deals and packages start popping up around this time.

Low season falls between May and June, or September and November. Spring months in parts of Mexico are hotter than in the summer months. Hotels are at a lower capacity and cheapest from May to September.
