Snorkelling in Bali is an unforgettable experience and one of the best places in the world for spotting all kinds of gorgeous wildlife. Why’s that? The island of Bali is part of a larger area known as the Coral Triangle. A relatively small region at just 1.6% of the earth’s ocean, the Coral Triangle is home to 76% of all known coral species.

Grab your snorkel gear and spend a day at one of these prime locations for coral reef sightseeing.

Tulamben

On the northeast coast, you’ll find Tulamben, a small fishing village and unexpected home to one of the most popular diving sites in Bali. People come from far and wide to get a glimpse of the shipwrecked USAT Liberty, which sunk in 1942 and is now claimed by ocean life.

Luckily you don’t need to go SCUBA diving to the bottom of the wreck to appreciate the stunning scenery. On clear days, snorkelers can swim over the 125-metre ship and get great views of the whole thing.

While you’re in Tulamben, don’t forget to visit the Coral Garden. This shallow coral reef has a unique integration of natural and human-made structures that encourage coral growth, and it’s a fabulous area for beginners to spot clownfish, octopi, and other enchanting creatures.

Nusa Penida

On the southwestern coast of Bali’s tiny neighbouring Penida Island, minutes away from the Pura Sekar Kuning temple and the Peguyangan Waterfall you’ll find Manta Point. This site gets its nickname from the friendly population of manta rays which swimmers and snorkelers can spot on a regular basis.

Manta rays are not to be confused with their dangerous relatives, stingrays. In fact, the manta rays off of Nusa Penida tend to be very calm and friendly as long as curious swimmers keep a respectful distance and don’t spook them away. Bring an underwater camera with you to Manta Point to capture your swim with the friendly giants.

Menjangan Island

On the northwestern tip of Bali, just across from the West Bali National Park, you’ll find the teensy Menjangan Islands. Head to its Coral Garden to explore the shallow coral reef which is home to sea anemones, colourful fish, and even sea turtles!

This is a fabulous location for beginner snorkelers, with plenty of tour guides around who can show you the hidden gems and help you get lucky enough to spot a sea turtle in its natural habitat.

On your way to Menjangan Island, you can make a stop at Pemuteran Bay and visit Biorock Reefs. The largest Biorock artificial reef project on the planet, this is a unique spot for exploring the sensational sculptures that help keep Bali’s waters teeming with life.

Blue Lagoon Beach

The eastern town of Padangbai is home to Blue Lagoon Beach, arguably the most popular choice for snorkelling in Bali, and for good reason! Swimmers find the wildlife here remarkably friendly around people, and with the accessible location usually boasting crystal clear waters, it’s a natural go-to for a fabulous ocean experience.
