Mexico may be well known for many of its more popular resort town hotspots, like Cancun, Los Cabos, Puerto Vallarta, but Huatulco, 500 km south of Mexico City, is an up-and-coming resort town with plenty to offer and so much to discover. Our Flightie Lauryn Lantela recently explored this part of Mexico with AMResorts and shares 4 good reasons why you need to make Huatulco your next stop:

On my recent trip to Mexico, I got to explore Oaxaca, a state I'd never been to before or knew much about. Huatulco, a small resort town, is a gleaming gem in Mexico's coastal crown of jewels, with beauty that goes beyond its beaches and extends deep within its history and culture. I travelled with AMResorts and enjoyed the luxury of their beautiful hotels. Not only did their service go above and beyond the expected, but it's around the clock! The room service is 24 hours, plus there's no wristband required, nor reservations for a la carte dining. It was the perfect touch for this short stay in paradise. Here are 4 reasons why you need to visit:

Authentic, untouched Mexico

Huatulco is a side of Mexico that hasn't quite become a staple in the mainstream - yet. This is a great time to fully explore this beautiful area of Mexico. Visit La Crucecita, a colourfully painted church in the middle of town and take a trip to a local specialty shop with delicacies, including the local Mezcal, a distilled alcoholic beverage made from the maguey plant - a close cousin of Tequila.

Beautiful bays and beaches

Most of Huatulco's bays and beaches are located in the national park, Parque Nacional Huatulco, and are only accessible by boat. The best (and only, really) way to explore some of the bays is by boat - and it's totally worth it. I suggest signing up for a 7-day bay cruise, sneaking in some snorkel time to see the coral reef and watch eels and puffer fish swim by, and seeing some of Huatulco's best angles underwater.

Ancient ruins

The Copatitlan ruins are nestled deep in the Copalita Eco-Archaeological Park. Over 2,000 years old, this ancient site has trails and a small museum to discover the region's fascinating pre-Hispanic history and culture.

Best coffee and chocolate in Mexico

About an hour outside of Huatulco, you just might find yourself sipping the best cup of coffee you've ever had. In the small mountain community of Pluma Hidalgo, the high altitude of the mountain ranges and warm seaside climate fosters the perfect conditions to grow some of the best coffee and cocoa beans in Mexico. Take a tour of this coffee mecca and taste for yourself!
