Calgary International Airport (YYC) has recently expanded, opening its new state-of-the-art International Terminal in the fall of 2016. Using an advanced call-to-gate boarding system, it is the first airport in Canada to use the technology.
Air Canada offers non-stop service from Calgary to London's Heathrow Airport aboard their B787 Dreamliner, as well as non-stop flights to Frankfurt, Germany, using the B777. WestJet, based in Calgary, also flies non-stop, servicing London's Gatwick Airport instead. Dublin, Ireland and Glasgow, Scotland are new, seasonal WestJet routes, connecting through St. John's and Halifax respectively.
Flying time from Calgary to London is 8.5 hours, 11hrs to Paris, 12hrs to Rome and 13.5hrs to Athens.
With Air Canada, WestJet and Air Transat all offering non-stop, direct and connecting flights to many European hotspots, Calgary is well equipped to handle the demand. While some more direct routes are seasonal, connecting flights through Toronto, Ottawa, Montreal or Halifax are available year round.
As with those visiting Europe from British Columbia, Albertans tend to take a longer trip through Europe than those coming from Eastern Canada.
