In contrast to UAE's capital, the more conservative Abu Dhabi, tolerant Dubai is a flashy desert oasis with all the comforts of home and then some. With forever-building cranes as much a part of its skyline as some of the most over-the-top structures ever built, ambitious Dubai gleams with glass, steel and an exciting playground-like energy. Steeped in tradition yet set on a futuristic course, Dubai is a modern mega-city that has never lost its respect for the past. Read more about Dubai
More about Dubai
While grandiose shopping malls, a massive man-made palm-shaped island and cloud-piercing buildings all display the extravagance of an obscenely rich oil producing nation, they don't paint the entire picture. Dubai's insane growth over the last couple of decades spurred a need for a cheap workforce on a massive scale. The result is a colossal melting pot of cultures from countries throughout Asia, Africa and the surrounding Middle East, creating the largest immigrant population in the world and as a result, some authentic restaurants and an overall inclusionary disposition.
Well-to-do districts and mixed immigrant municipalities sit side by side and include the lively Jumeirah district. With a popular beach and beautiful villas, Little Europe, Pakistan and Manila, the area well captures Dubai's diversity. The Jumeirah Beach Walk is a popular beachfront gathering place brimming with restaurants, nightclubs, an open air market and live music. Downtown, Dubai's arsenal of architectural mastery includes the iconic 160-floor Burj Khalifa (world's tallest), the great Dubai Mall (world's largest) and The Dubai Fountain.
Old Dubai's crowning jewel is the Jumeirah Mosque, the largest in town and a wonderful example of traditional Islamic architecture. It is Dubai's only mosque open to everyone and non-Muslim guided tours that help promote an understanding of Islam are available. Evening visits are especially popular as the entire mosque is bathed beautifully in dramatic lights.
Whether you've come for the shopping, a hot air balloon ride, to gawk at the architecture or to comb the desert on camel back, Dubai will impress. If the soon-to-be hosts of EXPO 2020 are best at anything, it's perhaps their ability to be the world's warmest hosts.
