Icelandair Airlines: A brief History
Founded on the north coast of Iceland in 1937, Flugfelag Akureyrar became Iceland's first commercial airline. It was renamed Flugfelag Islands in 1940, and soon after, Icelandair, moving its hub to Reykjavik and Keflavik International Airport (KEF). Fours years later, after returning from flight training in Canada, three young pilots from Iceland founded Loftleidir, a competing domestic carrier. Within a couple of years, both airlines began international air service with limited European routes.
The merger of the two airlines under a new holding name in 1973 created what we know today as Icelandair. The late 1980s saw the airline fully refit its fleet to exclusively Boeing aircraft, providing it with longer ranging capabilities. Today, Icelandair flights operate to and from a total of five Canadian cities.
Icelandair Destinations
Including its main hub of Reykjavik, Icelandair serves nearly 50 global destinations, with plans for four more by the end of 2018. For years, Icelandair's marketing campaigns have centred around the stopover, a free value-add for North Americans of a stay up to a week in Reykjavik on your way to or when returning from mainland Europe.
From Canada, Icelandair operates direct or non-stop flights to Reykjavik from Vancouver, Edmonton, Toronto, Montreal and Halifax. From USA, Icelandair offers more than a dozen routes with plans for two new U.S. destinations in 2018.
